The senna (from Arabic sanā), a diverse genus of flowering plants in the legume family Fabaceae, the subfamily Caesalpinioideae, and the tribe Cassieae, is a large genus native throughout the tropics, with a small number of species in temperate regions. The estimated number of species ranges from about 260 to 350, with the type species for the genus being Senna alexandrina. Approximately 50 species of Senna are known in cultivation.
